Quite simply, affiliate marketing is online commission sales made through an affiliate program.
An affiliate program is a program that facilitates the relationship between online merchants and their affiliates in a way that allows the affiliate to promote that company’s products or services for a commission. Affiliate programs are sometimes referred to as:
· Associate Programs
· Partner Programs
· Referral Programs
· Revenue Sharing Programs
Commissions are paid based on the purchase amount (pay per sale), a set value per visit (pay per click), or action such as registration or download (pay per lead).
Here is how affiliate programs work:
· You join and affiliate program and are provided a unique affiliate identification ID which is coded into your personalized affiliate links.
· You place your affiliate links on your website through the design such as sidebar placement or within the content of your website, like a blog post or page. Your affiliate links may also be included and distributed through your newsletters.
· A visitor to your site clicks on your link, purchases a product or service, or fills out a form on the merchant’s website.
· You earn a commission for the sale or lead generated through your link.
The concept is really, very simple – implementing the programs is a little tougher. To be truly successful at affiliate marketing, you have to do more than just pop a banner in the sidebar and wait for conversions to occur.
