Not having a technological green thumb doesn’t mean your website has to suffer. Even if you’re not the most advanced tech person in the world, you can still ensure your website gains visibility on the search engines through search engine optimization (SEO).
Don’t be scared of SEO. It may sound confusing, and it may be something you don’t want to implement, but it can be much easier than you think, especially if you use the following SEO strategies for non-techies.
Add keywords to your website content.
Search engines use tools known as spiders or crawlers to scan through the copy on your website. When crawling, they look for specific words, known as keywords, and they use these words to learn what your site is about in order to index and rank it appropriately. For example, if your website contained the keyword “monkeys”, your website would be listed on a search engine results pages when “monkeys” was used in a search query.
In order to add the most relevant keywords to your content, it’s important that you use a keyword tool to help you. Keyword tools will show you which keywords generate the best results, and it will also provide you with additional options to choose from when writing your content. When your copy contains a variety of strong keywords, it makes your site more attractive to the search engines.
Add local content to your website.
Search engines use something called geolocation technology in order to determine a user’s exact location. With geolocation technology, search engines have started providing results based on location and not just similar keywords. For example, if a user performs a search for “monkeys” and they’re located in San Diego, the search engine will first produce results for “monkeys” that also contain “San Diego” as a keyword, even if the user didn’t provide “San Diego” as a keyword.
This is known as local SEO, and if you want your website to land in front of consumers who can physically visit your store or who may be interested in frequenting websites that are near their home, you need to implement local SEO. In order to do this, you simply need to add location-based content to your website. Adding your phone number and physical address is a great start, but you should also consider adding nearby towns, local monuments or even buildings you’re located by. All of these local words will be considered local keywords, and they’ll help improve your local SEO.
Get backlinks where you can.
Earning additional website traffic is important for your SEO success, and a great way to earn more traffic is to push your URL out to as many channels as you possibly can. These backlinks will help drive traffic to your site, which is a great way to gain more visibility. Place your web address on your social media pages, sign up for local directories, and even provide guest posts in order to get more valuable backlinks to your site.
Transcribe audio and video files.
If you have audio and video files on your website, you also have a great SEO strategy in front of you. Most people don’t realize that search engines cannot access the content on these files, which means they don’t really help your SEO efforts. However, you can get your audio and videos to help your SEO efforts by having them transcribed. Search engines would be able to crawl through the transcripts of these files, so adding transcriptions of your audio and video files is an easy way to improve searchability. Now, you’re giving the search engines more keyword rich content to use to better rank your site, and you didn’t even have to do anything.
