Why do some people ask professionals to “pick their brains?” That intelligent mind represents thousands of dollars invested into a formal education and years of hard work that made them a powerhouse resource.
My twenty-seven years of hard work, accumulated knowledge, ability to connect with people, mentoring, advice, and compassionate heart are valuable, and they come at a price.
Please don’t be offended when I decline that invitation to lunch if the purpose is to “pick my brain.” I am, however, more than happy to quote you my consultation rate, and we can split the ticket for lunch.
I have done so much pro bono work that I have lost count. It has cost me a small fortune. I shudder to think about how much I have gifted to friends who “picked my brain.”
Until I am able to purchase groceries and pay my bills with “good intentions,” my generosity will be restricted. That does not mean I don’t love connecting and exchanging ideas as long as it is mutually beneficial.
